The Manasquan Classic Longboard Contest celebrated its 14th year with a crowd that some estimated over 300 at the Inlet Beach. The surf was a balmy 70 degrees and waves from the churned up Atlantic came in sets from waist to overhead while long periods of flat spells in between. This provided for a very entertaining display of longboarding in the old style – old school tradition. All contestants were required to use only pre-1967 longboards (3 feet overhead) without leashes which are standard equipment these days. If you lost your board – you had to swim!

The contest is a benefit to the Jersey Shore Chapter of Surfrider Foundation. The Chapter has been running a membership drive over the summer and is currently in 2nd place nationally. To sweeten the deal – the chapter offered every new member a chance to win a new custom made surfboard autographed by 7 times World Surfing Champ – Kelly Slater. The drawing has held and Elizabeth McKeon of Jersey City won the prized surfboard.

The Contest organizers would like to thank the town of Manasquan for allowing this annual event to take place – and to the many local volunteers who helped in making the contest into a smooth operation. Also thank you to the Manasquan High School Surf Team for the use of the sound system and tent.
